What this tool does
It writes a receipt for a sale that has just happened. You enter the items and the amount the customer handed over; the tool prices each line, adds the tax if you charge it, works out the total, and returns the change — or the shortfall, if the customer is paying part of a larger bill. The layout underneath mirrors the printed slip, so what you check on screen is what comes out of the printer. Nothing is stored and nothing is uploaded.
Method
| Step | Rule |
|---|---|
| Line amount | quantity × price |
| Subtotal | Σ line amounts |
| Tax | subtotal × rate ÷ 100 |
| Total | subtotal + tax |
| Change | tendered − total, or 0 if short |
| Balance due | total − tendered, when tendered is less |
Amounts are rounded to the cent once, at the end, so the change you hand back matches the total on the receipt to the penny rather than drifting by a rounding step.
Example
| Item | Qty | Price | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee | 2 | 3.50 | 7.00 |
| Sandwich | 1 | 6.00 | 6.00 |
Subtotal 13.00, no tax, total 13.00, tendered 20.00, change 7.00. Change the tendered amount to 10.00 and the receipt switches to a balance due of 3.00 instead, which is the honest reading of a part payment.
Printing a receipt
The print stylesheet hides the form, the site header, the footer and the adverts, so the print dialog sees only the receipt. Choose “Save as PDF” to keep a copy for the books, or send it to a receipt printer or a normal printer. Turn off “Headers and footers” in the dialog so no page URL is stamped on the slip.
This is a receipt form, not a till. It does not connect to a payment terminal, hold stock, or file tax, and it keeps no record — print or save the PDF if you need one for your accounts.
Frequently asked questions
Does the receipt calculate tax and change?
Yes. It applies the tax rate you enter to the subtotal, adds it to the total, and subtracts the amount tendered to show the change. The arithmetic is the same as the invoice page, with the labels changed: a receipt records what was paid, so there is no balance due unless the tender is less than the total, in which case the difference is shown.
Can I print a duplicate or reissue a receipt?
Yes, by printing the same page again — but nothing is stored, so the values have to still be in the form. If you need a retrievable record, save the printed PDF and keep it with your books; that PDF is the copy, not a database entry on this site. A reissued receipt should normally be marked as a duplicate, which is a note you add by hand.
How do I give a customer a receipt?
Fill in the form as the sale happens — the items, the tax if any, and what the customer handed over — and the receipt builds live underneath. Press “Print / save as PDF” to hand over a printed page or to email a PDF. Everything is in the page; nothing is stored, so each sale is a fresh form.
How is the change calculated?
The total is the items plus tax; the change is what was paid minus that total, floored at zero. If the payment is short, the tool shows the balance still due instead of a negative change, so it reads correctly whether the customer is paying in full or on account.
Why are there no customer fields?
Most receipts are handed over at the counter, where the buyer is anonymous. Only the business, the items and the tender are required here. If you need to name the buyer — for a business expense or a warranty — use the Invoice Generator, which has proper bill-to fields and a balance-due line.
Is a receipt the same as an invoice?
No. An invoice asks for payment, so it has a due date and a balance due; a receipt confirms payment, so it shows what was paid and any change. This tool is the second; the Invoice Generator handles the first.
Is my sales data uploaded?
No. There is no server, no account and no storage. The items and amounts are typed into the page and never leave your device, which also means the tool keeps working offline once it has loaded.
Can I use this in a shop?
Yes — it is a form that prints, so a phone, tablet or till PC on the counter can produce a receipt in a few seconds. It does not connect to a card terminal, a stock system or a tax filing, so it is a replacement for a paper receipt book, not for point-of-sale software.
