What this tool does

It fixes an image's orientation. Photos arrive sideways from a phone held the wrong way, upside down from a scanner, or mirrored from a selfie camera or a scanned slide. This tool rotates by 90, 180 or 270 degrees and mirrors horizontally or vertically, lets you combine those operations, and hands back a corrected file — with the rotation baked in, so every viewer shows the same thing.

Why 90° steps and not a free angle

A quarter turn is a pure rearrangement of pixels: each one moves to a new position and none is altered, so there is zero loss. Any other angle has to resample — averaging neighbouring pixels to fill the new grid — which softens details and leaves the corners empty. For straightening a horizon by a few degrees that trade is sometimes worth it, but for "this photo is sideways" the lossless quarter-turn is strictly better. This tool only does the lossless ones.

Rotation, flip, and the EXIF trap

The dimensions behave differently: a 90° rotation swaps width and height (a 4032×3024 photo becomes 3024×4032), while a flip leaves them alone and only mirrors the content. The EXIF trap is worth knowing — many phone photos store an "orientation" flag that some apps honour and others ignore, so the same file looks upright in one place and sideways in another. Applying a real rotation here removes that ambiguity permanently.

Nothing is uploaded

The image is decoded, transformed on a canvas and downloaded in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so a personal or private photo stays on your device throughout.

Frequently asked questions

What can this tool do?

Rotate an image in 90° steps and mirror it horizontally or vertically — the four operations a photo usually needs after it was taken sideways, downloaded back-to-front, or scanned upside down. You can combine a rotation with a flip and apply any number in one go.

Why only 90° steps?

A quarter-turn is lossless: it rearranges whole pixels and never blends them, so the image stays as sharp as the original. Arbitrary angles need interpolation, which softens edges and leaves empty corners to fill — worth avoiding unless you specifically want a tilted look.

Does rotating change the file size?

Only what the re-save costs. A 90° or 270° rotation swaps width and height; the pixel count is unchanged. If you keep PNG the result is lossless; with JPEG the quality slider decides the trade-off as usual.

What is the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotating turns the image about its centre, so a portrait becomes a landscape at 90°. Flipping mirrors it in place without changing the dimensions — horizontal flips left-right, vertical flips top-bottom. A flip is the fix for a scanned transparency or a selfie that came out reversed.

Can I rotate a photo by the angle stored in its metadata?

Not automatically here. Many phone photos carry an EXIF orientation tag that viewers apply, so an image can look upright in one app and sideways in another. This tool applies a real, baked-in rotation, which is the reliable way to make the orientation stick everywhere.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The transformation is drawn on a canvas in your browser and downloaded from the same page; nothing is sent to a server.
